Internet terms and how the Internet can help your business.
Getting
Started
#1:
If you don't already have an Email account, Get one! Posting an
email link with your listing will allow your customers to contact
you instantly 24 Hrs. a day.
-
Q:
What is the internet?
-
A:
The Internet is a global network of computers that communicate
using a common language. When you connect to a web site, you
are connected to the Internet. It's similar to the
international telephone system -- no one owns or controls the
whole thing, but it is connected in a manner that makes it
work like one big network.
-
Q:
What is the World Wide
Web?
-
A:
The World Wide Web (the web or WWW) gives you a graphical,
easy-to- navigate interface for viewing documents on the
Internet. These documents, as well as the links between them,
comprise a "web" of information.
How
to use the Internet effectively
-
You need the
right tools to do any job, on the Internet the two most
important tools are a Web Browser (You are using one to view
this page) and an email client. Many browsers and email
clients are available, and most of them are free and can be
downloaded from various sites on the Web.
-
If you already
have Internet Explorer 5 installed on your system then you
have the best Browser and email package available. If you
are using anything else, including older versions of
Internet Explorer I highly recommend you Visit the
Microsoft Web site to Download Internet Explorer Follow
the directions and you will have no problem downloading
and installing IE. Download time is about an hour, but
can be as much as two hours if your connection is slow. Don't
let that deter you, it is worth the wait.
-
O.K. I have the
right tools, What can I do with them?
-
First of all
you will be able to surf the Web much faster with your new
browser. It will also enable you to view some of the new
effects and make use of some of the new features the Web
has to offer.
-
Second, you
have the latest version Microsoft Outlook Express. With an
email account you can send and receive email any time,
from anywhere in the world, for free. Just follow the
instructions to setup your email account. Your email
address will be provided by your Internet Service
provider. I recommend using an email client such as
Outlook Express to handle your email, but you may find it
easier to sign up for a Web based email account.
